This month, nature provokes an unexpected lust for colours in us. The awe-inspiring shades of forests inspire the fabric choices of my trusty companions for the month of October. Even though I am already thinking about an annex to accommodate my wardrobe, reality hits like an autumn storm: There are gaps in my wardrobe; gaps that have to be filled! Pushed towards new ideas by the autumnal colour spectrum, I will use this chance to reinvent the flannel and tweed sections. Once in my mind’s eye, I will not forget about a striking suit, jacket or shirt until realised through needle and thread.
Mid blue flannel with a pink glen check by Holland & Sherry (280 g/m)
I had my first grandiose idea on a warm Sunday morning, having collapsed on my usual seat at the coffee house. Studying the “Culture” section of the local gazettes, an upcoming exhibition catches my attention. I am immediately reminded of a steel blue flannel recently presented to me by Mr Mogg. A steel blue, almost unusual enough to be out of an artwork itself. As if carefully applied by the painter, a fine pink check breaks the blue fabric’s hardness and breathes life into it. Add a stronger pink to the ensemble and it will start glowing. Pair this suit with a white, a light blue or – as I would suggest – with a pink shirt and you will be good to go. Obviously, wide lapels and a double-breasted fastening are the perfect choice.

Light brown tweed by Lovat (430 g/m)
My thirst for colour has not yet been quenched. Autumn is the perfect time to add a (new) tweed jacket to your arsenal. The base colour being a classic light brown, the – very tweedy – blend of different browns only becomes apparent at second glance. In addition, it features blue, dark green and purple stripes. A combination that I would love to wear all year. Maybe I could add even more colour and combine it with an orange shirt and an orange tie. Add a brown V-neck sweater and some mid-blue jeans to balance things, et voilà! A play of colours resembling the autumnal forests.

White flannel by Fox Brothers & Co (370 g/m)
Our final indulgence of flannel-season is this luxurious white flannel by Fox Brothers. You would usually see this on the cricket field, but in my opinion, it also goes very well with a pair of black dinner trousers, creating a very elegant combination. As daring as it might be, I would opt for double-breasted jacket with a 6×1 configuration. I can already imagine the jacket catching the muted light, softly shimmering as I sit in the corner of my favourite bar. If, for whatever reason, bars will have to close again, you can still wear it to swing by the castle of your choice to improve your Bryan Ferry impersonation.
