The Suits of the Month: November

Maximilian Mogg

The temperatures finally seem to be dropping. The cold dark months are upon us. All menswear enthusiasts rejoice! Your favourite fall-winter pieces can finally be brought out of aestivation. If your wardrobe isn’t quite there yet, here are our recommendations for those looking to pass the cold months in style.

Brown three-piece Porter & Harris tweed suit

Harris Tweed from Porter & Harding.

One of Scotland’s finest inventions, tweed is unrivalled when it comes to keeping you warm and we would recommend a robust three-piece suit to help you overcome even the harshest of weather. A brown heavyweight (450g/m) Harris Tweed herringbone from Porter & Harding will do just the trick. The three-button jacket should be single-breasted, have two vents, a notch lapel, and three patch pockets (two hip, one breast) with flaps, and feature leather buttons throughout. The waistcoat should have five buttons, four pockets, and a cloth back. The trousers, as usual, would be high and wide. In this case, this is particularly important to avoid discomfort from the rustic tweed. In fact, this is one of the rare cases in which we would recommend adding a half-lining (our trousers are usually unlined, as is the norm in England) for comfort. In terms of styling, we’re thinking two diagonal pockets, a back pocket with flap, and high turn-ups. A light blue heavyweight oxford cloth shirt with a tab collar, French cuffs, and finished off with a light red silk tie (pocket square is dealer’s choice) will give the look that added touch of elegance. In terms of footwear, we would recommend brown split-toe or full-brogue derbies.

A three-piece suit made from Porter & Harding Harris Tweed will cost €2050. The shirt will cost €219. As always, our non-resident shoe expert is Mr Leonard Kahlcke. He will be visiting us against next weekend (9th to 10th of November) – book an appointment by clicking here.

Beige two-piece Holland & Sherry corduroy suit with cashmere shirt

Corduroy from Holland & Sherry.

If you’re looking for a casual look and want to join the growing ranks of cordurboys, our recommendation is to start with a two-piece suit cut from a heavy (700g/m) sand-coloured, wide-wale cord from Holland & Sherry. The single breasted jacket should feature two large patch hip pockets and a patch breast pocket, no vents, notch lapels, and one closing button. Uncharacteristically, we would recommend that the trousers be cut slightly less wide than usual. They should, however, feature a plain front, no turn-ups, and a piped back pocket with a button closure. The ideal shirt for this look is a light blue cotton-cashmere blend shirt with barrel cuffs. It could even be worn open with a silk neckerchief for a bit of a louche look. Finish off your ensemble with some brown suede chukka boots.

A two piece suit from Holland & Sherry corduroy will cost €1550. The cotton-cashmere blend shirt will cost €329.

Harrisons grey and black pinstripe double-breasted suit with grey roll neck

Pinstripe from Harrisons of Edinburgh.

For November’s more formal occasions, we would suggest a double-breasted suit cut from a Harrisons of Edinburgh 300g/m black and grey pinstripe. The 6X2 double-breasted jacket should feature two straight flap pockets, two slightly elongated vents, a buttonhole on each lapel, and four buttons on each sleeve. A ticket pocket and/or gauntlets could be fun little additions. The trousers (high and wide) should feature two interior pleats, side adjusters, high turn-ups, and a back pocket with flap. If the cold weather has you feeling a bit like Patrick Bateman, either get professional help or just add some braces to add a touch of late-80s yuppie chic. Round out the look with a dark grey cashmere-silk roll neck sweater and black cap-toe oxfords.

The double-breasted pinstripe suit from Harrisons will cost €1500. An MTM silk-cashmere roll neck will cost €790. Herr-von-Welt has a great selection of braces, available directly online, or at our store in the Bleibtreustraße. MM/DC
