Suits of the Month April

Maximilian Mogg

April is here and June is fast approaching. Time to plan your summer outfits! Here are some of our thoughts on what to wear through the hottest months of the year.

Green, single-breasted windowpane blazer in a wool-silk-linen blend from Caccioppoli, beige trousers in a Hardy Minnis Fresco

Caccioppoli 240g/m – 49% wool, 30% silk & 21% linen
Hardy Minnis 310g/m – 100% wool.

We received our first Caccioppoli bunches last week and are proud to be able to offer our clientele some of the finest Neapolitan fabrics. Those who are familiar with our work know that we tend to recommend British fabrics. However, the beauty in terms of design and the fabric composition more common to Italian bunches makes this an irresistible choice. To go with the Italian feel, we’d recommend opting for a soft-tailored 3/2 roll jacket. Here, unlike for its classic three-button cousin, the top button (to be left unbuttoned, please) rolls under the lapel. This creates a slightly more casual two-button jacket which is perfectly complemented by the soft jacketing. To underline the casual feel, we’re keeping it simple with three rounded patch pockets, two back vents, and three sleeve buttons. The trousers we’d recommend are also in a fabric from a supplier that is new to our selection, namely Hardy Minnis. Frankly, with our love of Fresco fabrics, it’s a relief to be able to offer the original Frescos. We’ve opted for a beige colour for our wide-legged trousers that will feature no belt loops, two external pleats, slanted pockets, one back pocket with a flap, and turn-ups. In lieu of a dress shirt, we’d opt for a long-sleeved polo shirt cut from a light-blue Giro Inglese and finish off the look with a pair of Baudoin & Lange’s classic loafers.

The above jacket will cost €1390. The above trousers will cost €590. The above shirt will cost €249. The Baudoin & Lange loafers will cost €380.

Double-breasted suit in a light-grey Birdseye super 150s wool-cashmere blend from Standeven

Standeven 270g/m – 99% super 150’s wool, 1% cashmere

After that trip to Italy, we’re back to our regularly scheduled programming. Light-grey Birdseye is an oft-overlooked (and sometimes controversial) classic regularly seen on none other than Commander Bond himself. (NB: As our choice for this piece is a seasonal fabric that expires soon, this super 150s wool-cashmere blend comes in at a much lower price point than usual.) Sticking with the classic theme, we’d opt for 6×2 double-breasted jacket with a buttonhole on each lapel, two back vents, and two straight flap pockets and wide-legged trousers with turn-ups, two inverted pleats, slanted pockets, and one back pocket with a flap. The ideal shirt is a light-blue pin-point, while we’d recommend a regimental striped tie in a shantung silk. For that extra touch of personality, we’d recommend brown peccary-leather saddle loafers from our shoemaker of choice, Mr Leonard Kahlcke.

The above suit will cost €1720. The above shirt will cost 199€. Mr Leonard Kahlcke’s shoes start at €890.

Single-breasted suit in a light-grey Escorial wool-mohair blend

Standeven 230g/m – 60% summer kid mohair, 40% Escorial wool

We’re going to finish with one of the absolute highlights of any fabric selection. We were delighted to discover that Escorial’s Primavera bunch offers Escorial wool-mohair blends. Talk about a match made in Heaven. Extremely soft, rare, and crease-resistant Escorial mixed with the crease-resistance, robustness, and slight sheen of mohair. We’d recommend opting for a two-piece suit. The one-button jacket would be single-breasted with peak lapels, two back vents, and four sleeve buttons. The high-rise plain-front trousers would have slanted pockets, one piped seat pocket, and a military cuff. A white shirt with a two-layer front cut from voile and a burgundy tie with medallions will do just the trick. In terms of footwear, we would recommend black oxfords by Gaziano & Girling.

The above suit will cost €2250. The above shirt will cost €279. Gaziano & Girling shoes start at €1100. MM/DC
